Hey Gang!
Just a reminder, if you’re looking for an early evening latte art throwdown - tonight’s the night! Blue State at 300 Thayer is holding their first event of 2012. Bring your $5 at 8PM and pour your heart (or rosetta, or tulip) out! Also, a few of us are braving the storm and heading down to NYC tomorrow, to check out the first ever Coffee Common held in the US of A!...
Huge Coffee Week!
Hey Gang,
Just in case you were wondering where all the coffee events have been - it turns out they are all THIS WEEK. Thinking about going pro with your latte art skills? If you are the the Ayatollah of Rock ‘n Rollah, if your tulips are more like fourlips, if your hearts have legit arteries and ventricles, if the word “tul-setta” means something to you, then you might just be...

Filmed at and around Abraco Espresso, in the East Village, NYC.
I find this shop so inspiring and motivating, it may be my favorite shop. Whenever I consider what my own place might look like, it always ends up a lot like Abraco.

Tom’s of Sweet Maria’s is giving away some rare coffee varietals in plantable seed form! Ever wanted to start your own little windowsill finca? Now’s the time!
Madcap Coffee
Inspired by the beautiful Four Barrel Coffee video that Simon posted, I’d like to add two visually stunning videos created by our favorite Grand Rapids, MI coffee shop Madcap Coffee. If you were at MANE, you possibly had a chance to meet the owner/barista Trevor Corlett. Super nice fella doing some super cool things! Get inspired! -Mark!
Green Bean from Hybrid Media Co. on...
Four Barrel’s new video, as shown on the inestimable Sprudge.com - I sigh dreamily imagining the day when a roaster retailer of this caliber sprouts from the heavily composted soil that is the Providence Coffee Society. Maybe you’ll start it!

Phat Farmhouse →
Counter Culture Coffee is taking another step toward making their coffee offerings as seasonal (and thus as reasonably fresh from the farm) as possible. If this is your sort of thing, they’re offering farmhouse, a ‘coffee concept’ which changes according to what their newest imports are. Interesting for sure!
Thus Spoke Illythustra →
Andrea Illy, member of the illy-ustrious Illy family and the guy running the show over at Illy Caffe, takes a little time to talk to the Guardian UK. If you have a little time, check it out. Interesting how his ideas don’t seem to carry over to actual application, at least in the US. Also nice to see someone taking a stand on Fair Trade, for good or for bad.

Not the Right Scott
Just an anecdote from your humble blogkeeper:
So a few Saturdays ago, I was working the morning shift at our busiest location. This is a weekly pleasure for me, a chance to get on bar and interact with customers, a chance to reassure myself that the kid’s still got it, at least in terms of espresso and steamed milk! There is also a simple pleasure in making things, in getting lost in the...
Another video from the recent Nordic Barista Cup. Glanville blows minds.

MANE Is Coming! →
The weekend of October 7-9 brings to Providence the all-time greatest combination of education, socializing and all-round beneficial situating for anyone interested in working in or just stoked on coffee, for the lowest dollar-per-educational-moment ratio one could reasonably hope for - that’s right, the Mid Atlantic North East Artisan Coffee Conference is coming back to Providence, and...

A new article from everybody’s favorite Italian Barista Champion, Giorgios Milos! Just like a fresh crop Costa Rica from a new roaster, draw your own conclusions.

An Oldie But a Goodie: JimSeven's Blog List →
Wherein James Hoffmann reveals his entire Coffee Blog Subscription List. I copied it wholesale onto my own RSS feeder: if you are particularly coffee mad, I recommend you do the same. Loads of useful back reading as well as an easy way to keep up with the Joneses, such as they are!

Cosimo Libardo, head honcho, big cheese, generally awesome guy of Nuova Simonelli gives a fairly dry but hugely fascinating talk. If you have time & the inclination, totally worth a couple of views.
CleanHotDry Reviews Onyx →
Check this out, Providence. Onyx serves over 20 drip coffees, all by the cup, and there is no milk or sugar of any kind in the shop - and that includes from the espresso bar! This place exists, and presumably, makes money. Mind = blown. Would this be possible today in Providence? Would you go?
Second Tamper Tantrum Live video! This one starring good old James Hoffmann, former World Barista Champion and reigning Nicest Man in Coffee. JH touches on a number of issues our emerging specialty coffee scene in Providence would be wise to keep in mind: communicating our three words, being empathetic to consumers to whom a 5oz cappuccino is an oddity, and figuring out what our tablecloth is.
First Tamper Tantrum Live video posted by the esteemed Steven Leighton. More to come! If you work in a coffee shop, own a coffee shop, or go to coffee shops, Colin Harmon talks here about what he (twice-over Irish Barista Champion!) has learned about the business.
Dedication
“More than 90% of the cups of drip coffee I’ve purchased in cafes have been unsatisfactory. Given that I have thrown out all of these unsatisfactory cups, any those cups typically cost US$2, I have been effectively spending more than US$20 per enjoyable cup of coffee. I offer this chapter in an effort to decrease my per-cup spending.” - Scott Rao, Everything But Espresso
